Another Star shining

I know you all remember that day Oyoo was the name that everyone wanted to associate with. I remember some lady friends came to ask for his contacts, but today we won’t talk about him. Because when you come from Naxvegaz #032 be sure to be among the best.

During the weekend, we experienced a sweet taste of #KRUWomensLeague. Honestly most people didn’t know that Kenya has a Female Rugby team. To their surprise, it’s not just one or two teams…. And many more teams coming up…

What caught our attention was the fact that some very good players were not playing in this league. Later we overheard someone talking about they are not allowed to play because they might get an injury during the games and hinder them from playing the upcoming matches…… We thought it was a Joke until we saw the list of 12 player’s from Kenya Lioness to attend the Commonwealth games, down at Gold Coast, Australia in April.

Her name was there, yes am talking about another Star from #032 Grace Okulu alias Jossy. NakuruRFC Fly Half. Born in a family of 7 siblings, 4 brothers and 3 sisters, she is number 3 and the second person in the family to play rugby after her elder brother.

Loved Rugby from a young age of 5years playing touch rugby and not even knowing about the real game, she decided to try something different and that’s when a friend took her to NakuruRFC and she began her first Rugby training at age 12. Now engaging with other girls who are in this sport, she learned that you can be anything you want to be after watching Ellena Green- (Australia) & her role model Portia Woodman (NZ) play.

She still had fear in her because she didn’t know this game we call Rugby, she was scared of even playing because she never knew what would happen if she makes a mistake. The shouting and corrections from the coach made her tremble at first but then realized that, you can’t grow if you are not to keep working hard.

As they always say, ‘hard work pays’ she got her first recognition to the Kenya Lioness team at age 15, and her first game was the HSBC women’s tournament in France. She never made any try but converted for the Lioness against Japan.

After that experience she decided to shine on and on and her talent is visible everywhere she plays. ‘I Love Rugby because it has taught me to be discipline and responsible because at the end of the day it’s not only about what you do in the pitch alone but also in the world outside Rugby.’ She added.

A form 3 Student at SportLight Academy prays that one day, she will become a Rugby ambassador and help other young girls like her to love and play rugby without fear.

All the best in your endeavors and may you unlock all your potentials.
